Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance

A clogged gutter prevents rainwater from flowing away from ypur home.  This will cause water to pool on the roof or near the hose possibly damaging the foundation, or resulting in leakage into the house.  Therefore it is essential that the gutters are kept clan of dirt, leaves, twigs, and debris.  You should make a habit of thoroughly cleaning your gutters every spring and fall, or after a windy period.

Things you will need;  Ladder, Bucket, Gloves,  Trowel, Tongs, Garden Hose.

TIPS

1.  After placing the ladder on a solid surface per the instructions on the ladder, begin cleaing the debris near the downspout.  Use a trowel to pick up the debris, and place it in a bucket.  Be careful, as there may be screw points and other hazards inside the gutter that can cut you.

2.  Don't rach.  Move the ladder to access un-cleaned areas.  Climb the ladder and use gutter cleaning tongs to pick up debris from the roof gutter.  Use a wire hook to attach a bucke to the ladder and place debris in the bucket so you always have at least one hand on the ladder.  Repeat until the entire gutter is cleaned.

3.  Now, flush the gutter lengths using a hose to removefiner materials not removed with the trowel and tongs.

4.  If the gutter doesn not deain, the downspout may be clogged.  In order to clean the downspout, follow these simple steps.  A) Remvoe downspout from the pipe if it runds underground.  B)  Lock the hose nozzle at full pressur and feed the hose up from the bottom of the spout.  C) If this doesn't clear the dhounspout, use a plumbers snake to clear the blockage.  D) Reattach the downspout and flush the entire gutter again.  If water spills out where the downspout connects to the underground pipe then the underground pipe is clogged.

You might want to consider installing leaf guards to help prevent debris from entering the gutter.
